Just had a baby? Congratulations on your new arrival. Now that you have made it through the delivery, it’s time to embark on a new chapter with your bundle of job. As new parents, you and your partner will have to make some adjustments. One of these is establishing a proper sleep routine for you and your baby.
It’s common knowledge that newborns spend a lot of time sleeping. Sleep is essential for your baby’s physical and mental development and well-being. But, many parents are not aware of how much sleep is enough for a newborn.
In most cases, newborns can sleep for 16 to 17 hours a day. However, this varies from one baby to another. Many of them don’t get enough sleep during the first few weeks outside of a mother’s womb. As a result, new parents stay up awake at night to feed or comfort them. Babies need a few weeks to adjust to life after birth. They will sleep for a few hours and then wake up and go back to sleep again. But, this unpredictable routine doesn’t last long.
Once your child hits 6 weeks, they will sleep for shorter periods during the day and for longer hours at night. That being said, they are likely to wake up at night for feeding.
Somewhere between 3 to 4 months, you can work on forming a set routine for them. Even during this phase, they will wake up several times at night. Once your baby crosses 6 months, they will be able to sleep for 8 hours at night. This will allow you to sleep peacefully as well.
But, the most important thing to remember is that all babies are different. What works for one child, it may not work for another.
In order to help your baby sleep well, try to have a consistent bedtime routine. They should be well fed before hitting the bed. In addition, make sure your room is dark and quiet. Sing a lullaby to put your little one to sleep. A well-rested baby is a happy, healthy baby. Don’t take your newborn’s sleep routine lightly.
